First symposium in Aquitaine of brain plasticity Thursday, September 30 and Friday, 1 October 2010 Bordeaux. The ability of organisms to modify their behavior and adaptative capacity in response to environmental challenges requires a continuous adaptation and remodeling of the nervous system throughout life. The recent discovery that the adult brain creates new neurons from pools of stem cells has implications both for the putative reconstruction of damages or lost neural pathways, and for the understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of behavior in general.

Insights into the neurobiology of addiction

The top neurobiologists in the field of addiction, from around the world, will be brought together in Aquitaine, France, for three days (October 12th to 15th, 2010). They will present the most up-to-date research findings and participate in debates with the public concerning the latest ideas and results in addiction research, ranging from molecular neuroscience to human clinical research. The conference will take place in Arcachon, one of the loveliest towns in Aquitaine. A program of sightseeing activities will allow participants to explore the area’s foremost attractions (the Bassin d’Arcachon, the Dune du Pyla, the ‘ville d’hiver’, and its beautiful 19th century villas…) and of course to sample the wonderful local cuisine (oysters, Bordeaux wines…). read more....

Why is it that only some drug users become addicts? This is the question that has been addressed by the teams of Pier Vincenzo Piazza and Olivier Manzoni, at the Neurocentre Magendie in Bordeaux (Inserm unit 862). These researchers have just discovered that the transition to addiction could result from a persistent impairment of synaptic plasticity in a key structure of the brain. This is the first demonstration that a correlation exists between synaptic plasticity and the transition to addiction. The results from the teams at Neurocentre Magendie call into question the hitherto held idea that addiction results from pathological cerebral modifications which develop gradually with drug usage. Their results show that addiction may, instead, come from a form of anaplasticity, i.e. from incapacity of addicted individuals to counteract the pathological modifications caused by the drug to all users.
This research was published in the journal Science on 25 June 2010.
